Working when work is slow

When paid client work is slow I tend to rotate my thoughts to my fiction novel. I completed about 14 points on index cards, and I’ve planned at least 10k words to get these points in. But did I write it? Nope! Sorry, but the mix of the cold and the new furniture being delivered and preparing for traveling in the next few months has got me all wound up. I’m fascinated by different habits of different kinds of professionals. I have been writing for clients all week but when it comes to drumming up some content on my own time it seems like I always fall flat. I’ve published an ebook and articles about getting there to your best life in work and personal sides. Even though I am always working, it seems like I plateau at times. Yes, work is great. Paid work is what gets me through and since I’m really picky I get to work with people who are smart and highly motivated. I really need to apply some sort of reward system for writing on my own time. I’ve been culling through Pinterest for photo inspiration for different locations and characters in my own personal writing. In the process I’ve pulled together some interesting links that even the non-creative mind could use. When winter hits, I’m usually focused on doing things around the house. Like ordering new furniture, planning travel destinations for the warmer weather coming, organizing everything… I find that calm spaces help my mood and help me get focused on projects, instead of the dusty tumbleweeds that gain momentum when I turn the heat vents on. So I’m all about getting my bed super cozy, espresso, writing, cleaning and shopping from ebay and amazon since it’s freezing and my pajamas are all season attire. BuzzFeed has some good articles about getting your house super snuggle-y and organized. Here and here On the topic of writing, getting organized is the key. I’m not a fan of religious themed writing, but this article about JK Rowling is pretty much on point. I find it very helpful to learn that my favorite writers had a lot of failure before they got to where they wanted to be. It also makes me feel better about spending 10+ years on a novel. On health, I do a lot of different things that are working for me. I do yoga everyday for at least 20-40 minutes, and I ran/ jogged 6 miles last week so I’m getting back in the habit. It had been hard just using yoga for my primary fitness conditioning plan, but after getting in the habit after 2-3 months it didn’t seem like such an interruption in my day. I actually look forward to it, and a lot of moves I can do in bed before I actually want to wake up for real and get the day rolling. I don’t eat wheat and I don’t do sugar or alcohol anymore. But there are some other things I’ve found interesting to try. I’m currently oil pulling as I write this. WTF is oil pulling? Well glad you asked: This is an interesting place to learn about this practice. I'm using coconut oil for this. I’ve only been doing it for the past few days so I don’t have any true life account on how it’s working for me yet. It’s also jarring to think that this is still happening in Flint: And this is America. I don’t know much about what is going on today but I think the US government will have no choice but to offer residents at least 100k to move like they did with the Centralia underground fires (read more about that here) Well, that’s what’s good this week. I’ll be writing and reading and making things happen for clients. Have a great Monday everyone!
