Five Things Graphic Designers are Tired of Hearing

Where do you get your ideas?

From you, the client. I haven’t had an original idea in at least 5 years.

This is legit, I get my ideas from you. Before I begin any project I get a client on the phone or on a video chat and ask a bunch of questions. I’ve covered this here, I seem to be interviewing the client more so than they interview me. It may put some potential clients off, but that’s a good thing. You don’t want to be stuck with a client who can’t make a decision. By the time they do decide on something you’re either moved on to the next project with another client or unavailable or any number of things.

I like it let things breathe, and allowing a client at least a day or up to a week to decide on things is enough in my book. I think your gut instincts are important, and when clients say that they have to show everyone, the spouse, the kids, the mail carrier before they decide on something, is not the main goal here. The goal is to make you (IE the client) happy.

How do you get paid?

In US Currency preferably.

I often use Upwork which has taken a lot of the risk out of getting paid. But long term clients that I maintain outside of that model pay via Paypal. I generally set up a bunch of small milestones to get to the main goal, the end final. I don’t accept payment until clients are completely happy, and since I weed out stragglers at the start I ensure that my clients are serious about their project and that attitude is shared with myself and whoever else is working on the project.

I need x, y and z done today with unlimited revisions. Is $50 enough?

No.

Why are you charging so much? I can get this done for x amount of money somewhere else.

Well then, go somewhere else.

I often get this response, and then this person comes back into contact with me a month to a year later saying they spent x amount of dollars on their project and the designer/ writer left them with no final. That’s when it’s a rush/ emergency and I get to charge the rush fee, which can be up to 50% of the project value. If I’m going to drop everything, or at least put it on the back burner because of your inability to plan, you’re going to pay more and be happy about it because I deliver.

Where are my final files? Check your email.
