There are certain books I like to re-read over and over, but it depends on the weather. In cooler weather, like the approaching winter, I like to read books that are set in that season. Other books sort of transport me to the summer, because once the colder months of February come in we will all need a reminder that the earth was once green and lush.
There are books that I read in certain months too. I used to re-read American Gods at least once a year for many years. It was always a winter reading book to me. Leaves of Grass definitely reminds me of summer, I think about reading this under a big lush tree in an idyllic park setting. I try to read Phantasmagoria around Halloween, it's especially wonderful when you are in bed during a thunderstorm.
The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry reminds me that writing is a fluid free-form art, and I can do whatever the fuck I want with language. Sometimes I need that gentle reminder when I start to get stuck on my work.
I am the sort of person who will bring a cookbook to bed and read it like a novel. Feasts for All Seasons gives me ideas about what is in season during the winter, how to put things together that I probably already have in the fridge, and I learned that just any old tea or coffee just won't do. I'll be honest, I do spoil myself with espresso in the morning and tea throughout the day. I'm kind of picky, but I think it's worth it to take some time to do small things right.
