All the Summer Faves

Winged eyeliner is tough at first, but practice makes perfect! I found some solutions for Summer. Let’s face it, it’s hot…

I don’t know about you but my face feels like it’s melting in every sense: My sunscreen gets in my eyes, my eyes water, my make up gets ruined, and then I just use a saline nose wipe as an impromptu face towelette to get it all off and make it seem like I did the bare face thing on purpose ;)

In my travels I have been experimenting with some new products, plus mixed in are some old faves that are staples in my makeup bag.

First thing first: Foundation. It is too hot to do a full face of foundation! What I’ve been doing is applying a dime size worth of my preferred tinted moisturizer by L’Oreal all over my face and neck with my fingers. I know that tinted moisturizers don’t do the job in terms of coverage, that’s not a big deal to me. I am concerned with SPF and BB Cream benefits, and L’Oreal fulfills that requirement for me. To color correct some dark spots I use Stila’s color corrector. I just use ½ a pump on one finger and daub little spots over the tinted moisturizer, then blend lightly with a brush. If needed I smooth out edges with my ring finger, but once I powder it all seems to melt together. I like Physician’s Formula powders because it doesn’t settle into fine lines around my chin and mouth. I’ve really been loving this new contour kit. The deep shade is matte and the blusher and highlight are a little bit metallic, but not too much. I use a large kabuki brush and swipe over the blush and contour shade lightly, and I build up the pigment to deposit on my cheek. I’ve been using a draping technique lately, if you check out this youtuber he’s got some great tips on that.

The palette I used does had quite a bit of fall out, so just have a tissue at the ready in case. I like to apply my contour over the tinted moisturizer, I think it adheres to the face better. Then at the very end I just powder my t zone with Physician’s Formula translucent powder. I use a eyeshadow brush ($1 from the drugstore) to apply the highlighter all over the lid of my eye plus around my under eye and top of the cheekbone areas. It’s very subtle but you can build it up. There are some options for winged eyeliner, but I played around with some different things:

The round tip felt liner was very pigmented, a deep black. But it doesn’t get a sharp tip on the wing, so I opted to switch for the Rimmel felt tip, I like the feel of the round ball tip felt liner but L’Oreal Infallible, but it does not get that sharp tip unless you roll the barrel while applying, if you apply light pressure I think you would be able to get that sharp point at the very end of the wing. But for me it was easier to just switch products. Why not just use the Rimmel felt tip? Well, I do like it and it does glide nicely. But it’s not dark enough! Maybe because of my eyeshadow, but it just wasn’t dark enough and it was a little splotchy so building it up wasn’t going to work out for me. I do recommend allowing for a few seconds for drying time. It applies very wet and does look shiny. There was some depositing on my eyelid after wearing for about an hour, but that maybe because I didn’t wait long enough to dry. I recommend using a dark black powder shadow to set with an angled eyeshadow brush if you want to get a really matte finish. Both the Rimmel and L’Oreal say ‘up to 24 hour’ wear time, so we shall see… I am loving a pink lip for summer. Revlon has some great formulations, they are very rich and buttery. The pink I wore today is a watermelon shade and it’s just right for my tan skin tone. I do love a nude lip, but with my deeper skin tone this time of year it just looks like I smeared foundation on my lips, it’s that stark of a difference. If you love a good dupe, Rimmel has a nice range of nude shades. I haven’t been wearing mascara lately, my allergies have been going wild and the mascara just seems like a good place for pollen to stick to. After I apply my setting powder I just brush my eyebrows and I’m good to go.

I hope this has been helpful! I have combination skin and I have been alternating cleansers, using a cream charcoal scrub and a foaming cleanser. I do apply an alpha hydroxy cream but usually only at night. It is a resurfacing cream, so just be aware that you will need extra SPF coverage if you use this in the morning. Thanks so much and Happy Monday everyone!
