Today I said goodbye to a very special pair of vintage Pol o Craft nail art wall sconces. These sculptural wall pieces were handmade in 1975 by Pauline A Owen in Reading Pennsylvania. With their delicate floral arrangements created from small nails and ceramic on wood backing, they’re a perfect example of midcentury folk art. They sold today for forty four dollars on my Etsy shop. Only six people viewed them and just one person favorited them—but that one person knew exactly what they were looking for.

What made this sale more meaningful for me is that these sconces have history. They hung in the dining room I turned into an office in my mother’s former house in Bath New York. That house was a grey shingle colonial built in 1800. It had a sweet front porch and was full of stories. A reverend originally built it for his niece, but she passed away before she could move in. So the reverend had his nephew move in instead. He was the village’s first mortician. As far as I know he never practiced in the house—thankfully—but that little piece of local lore always followed the home.
The house was well loved but definitely not built by a carpenter. The kitchen cabinets were wonky and the corners of the stairs never quite made sense. But it had charm and intention. Over the ten years we lived there we replaced the floors, windows, roof, and furnace—but we lived with the crooked cabinets. They were part of the character.
My office became a space of creativity and healing. The sconces hung over my workspace and were part of that quiet backdrop to so many moments. Letting them go today felt bittersweet. I hope their new owner feels the love and energy they’ve absorbed over time.
Thank you to everyone who stops by the shop and supports these small but soulful pieces of the past. There’s more to come, and each one carries its own story.
