Things Learned about Creative Work

I’ve been writing for clients since 2002 and some things you would think get easier. I touched on this a few blog posts back, saying that you would think this would get easier the more you do it. Like exercise, you build up your strength and endurance. I feel like it’s the opposite with writing. It never gets easier. It’s not easy to begin with. But over time you learn what works for you, you develop habits that make you comfortable. No, it doesn’t get easier. You just get better.

I find that it’s the opposite with fine art and graphic design work for me. It comes easily to me. I guess drawing has always been something that’s helped me through many things in my life. I wouldn’t say it’s mindless work but I do find that the routine settles me. And I keep it to a minimum of supplies. Lately I’ve been doing marker drawings on postcards, just for myself and for friends. But in design jobs I always start from scratch, literally scratching pen on paper. I often re-use tracing paper over and over again. It’s not unusual for me to scan preliminary sketches that have notes on the side from a client conversation or sketches from another job.

But creative work isn’t always for clients. I have a bunch of projects I’ve put on the shelf just because paid work comes first. I’m a bit embarrassed because I’ve posted a little piece on Archive of Our Own just because I wanted to put two fictional characters that are not my own in an animal shelter. But then I had to devise a way for them to get there. And then 2,000+ words later I’ve gotten over 200 hits on this. Just wow, people of the internet huge thank you.

I’m keeping this post super short just because I got 7 articles to do for the advice column. So please keep updated on the Rissy Roo’s fashion blog. You can find my writer’s profile right here.
